HMS Project of the Day: Clapping for a new iMac

Today’s project is for a high-end photographer that’s moving a lot of data. We’re replacing a pair of older iMacs with an updated 27″ iMac version  ( that has a Retina display (5K) and a 4.2GHz quad-core Intel Core 7th-gen i7 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Due to the amount of content stored on DropBox and the need to future proof for a few years, we’ve recommended buying this with the 3TB Fusion Drive for $3249 and then adding Crucial  32GB RAM ( which not only complements the Radeon Pro 580 to allow Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop to meet his real-time shoot-and-select-and-project criteria, but also saves a significant amount of money over the Apple approach.

Apple sells this same unit for about $4000 but our solution comes in at least $500 less expensive and has the same fast 2400MHz DDR4 Memory.  Plus it rounds out the machine at 40 GB of total memory, since the Apple iMac 27″ comes with only 2 of the 4 RAM slots populated.

Look forward to the install, which should be painless thanks to DropBox and a consistent backup regimen that we’d helped put in place a few years ago using a Synology 2-bay network attached storage (NAS) appliance.
